CKT-UTAS Secures Bronze at Maiden Minor GUSA Championships

C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) made a commendable debut at the inaugural Minor Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Championships held from the 2nd to 6th May 2024 at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa.

The University’s team clinched a bronze medal in the men’s tug-of-war competition, marking a significant achievement in their first appearance.

In addition to their bronze medal, the CKT-UTAS team achieved fourth place in men’s arm-wrestling and fifth place in women’s ampe, showcasing their diverse athletic talents.

The tug-of-war finals saw fierce competition between CKT-UTAS and the University for Development Studies (UDS), culminating in CKT-UTAS tactically securing the bronze medal.

The 17-member team included six female athletes: Grace Chianka, Fatimatu Sulemana, Maslyn Bugase, Alijetu Musah, Ruhainatu Mutari, and Sikena Wusuwe and eleven male athletes: Mumuni Issahaku Aziz, Ayitinya Akabandoa, Apuri Wedam Joshua, Ignatius Kpebu, Hakam Mohammed, Daniel Ateyire, Felix K. Ametodzi, Bismark N. Apeligide, Owusu Dell, Sumaila Mustapha, and William Frimpong Gyamfi. The team was supported by technical officials Jude Domokyile Nayasama (Ag. Head of Sports), Dr. Bright Nana Kwame Ahia (Academic Board Representative on the Sports Advisory Committee) and Mr. Everest Lampson.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Sports Advisory Committee, Prof. Samson A. Abagale, represented the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Albert Luguterah, in announcing CKT-UTAS’s acceptance to host the next Minor GUSA Championship in 2025. Prof. Abagale emphasised the importance of continuing sports strategies like ampe and arm-wrestling to promote traditional games and healthy lifestyles among students.

In recognition of their historic performance, each athlete received a certificate and cash rewards, celebrating their dedication and effort as champions.

This achievement highlights CKT-UTAS’s growing presence in university sports and sets a promising precedent for future competitions.
