Prof. Eric Magnus Wilmot is a Professor of Mathematics Education. He holds a PhD (2008) in Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy (with specialisation in Mathematics Education) from the Michigan State University; a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education (1997), a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics (1998) and Diploma in Education all from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

He has a vast teaching experience at the tertiary level in Ghana and the U.S.A. In Ghana, he taught extensively at the University of Cape Coast while in the U.S.A., he has lectured at the Michigan State University and Lansing Community College (both in the State of Michigan); Unity College, Kennebec Valley Community College and the University of Maine at Oromo, (all in the State of Maine).

At the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Wilmot was the Provost of the College of Education Studies from August 2016 to July 2019. As the Provost, he initiated the strategic vision planning process and led a college-wide process culminating in a five-year strategic plan for research and development for the College. He was also part of a team that led the development of a new four- year degree programme for pre- service elementary school teachers in the Colleges of Education affiliated to UCC.

Other positions he held at UCC include, the Head of the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (August 2013- July 2016). In 2016, he won an election to become the foundation Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Education but before he assumed office, he was appointed the first Provost of the College of Education Studies referred to earlier.

Professor Wilmot was a very active member of the UCC branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and held the following offices (executive positions) of the Association: Vice President (1999-2000), Ag President, (2000- 2001), and President (2009-2011).

He has also worked on a number of local and externally funded research projects in Ghana. These include the World Bank funded ‘Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP)’ from 2016 to 2019, UNICEF Ghana’s Child Friendly School (CFS) Project in 2011, Pasty Collins’ Trust Fund Initiative (PCTFI)’s funded CARE/Ghana Kumasi office’s IMAGE Project from 2008 to 2010; the first and second Improving Education Quality (IEQ 1 &2) Projects in Ghana from 1993 to 1997 and 1999 to 2001 respectively; the Rockefeller Foundation’s funded Female Education in Mathematics and Science in Africa (FEMSA) Projects in Ghana from 1995 to 1997; Whole School Development Process, a project of the then Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, Ghana, which was sponsored by the Overseas Development Agency (ODA), Britain; and the Improving Learning through Partnership (ILP) Project in Ghana, one of United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Quality Improvement in Primary Schools (QUIPS) Project in Ghana in 1998 and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana’s sponsored projects that investigated factors that contributed to the poor performance of nurses/midwife trainees in their licensing examination in Ghana in 2012 and 2013; as well as development and validation of instruments for research aimed at investigating the attitude of nurses and midwives in Ghana’s health delivery system from 2013 to 2015. Between 1998 and 2001, he worked for the West African Examination Council, serving in several capacities; from being an Assistant Examiner and Team leader at the General Certificate of Education, Ordinary level (GCE “O” Level) and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination(WASSCE), to being a moderator of Mathematics papers of the then General Certificate of Education, Advanced Level (GCE “A” Level) Examinations, as well as the Chief Examiner for the Mathematics papers of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), in charge of the Western Region of Ghana. From 2009 to date, he has worked as the lead curriculum and assessment consultant for Ghana’s Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Outside Ghana, Professor Wilmot has worked on a number of research projects in Malawi, Mali, Ethiopia, and U.S.A. In 2003, he was a member of a team in charge of mathematics programmes from the College of Education, University of Michigan that restructured Teacher Education in Ethiopia under a USAID sponsored project.

In Malawi, he worked as a member of Mathematics Consultants (Resource Person) to Miske Witt and Associates Inc. (MWAI), a team that provided technical support to two USAID sponsored projects; the Malawi Teacher Training Activity (MTTA) and The Primary School Support Program (PSSP) undertaken by American Institute of Research (AIR) in 2005 and 2008 respectively.

In Mali, he worked as a Consultant to the Minnesota International Development and Education Consortium (MIDEC) on the Development for Education for Girls’ Empowerment (DEGE) Project. This Project was funded by the Pasty Collins Trust Fund Initiative (PCTFI).

In the U.S.A., while pursuing his doctoral studies, Professor Wilmot worked as a Research Assistant on the “Knowledge of Algebra for Teaching (KAT) project” at the Division of Mathematics and Science Education of the Michigan State University, U.S.A.

Prior to his appointment as the Vice -Chancellor of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, he was a Libra Professor of Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Maine at Oromo, where he was also engaged in on-going research into Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching College level calculus.

Professor Wilmot has over fifty (50) publications to his credit and has made more than twenty (20) presentations at local and international conferences.
His Research interests include:

 Gender issues in mathematics achievement
 Use of Multimedia Technology in Teaching
 Educational Policy issues
 Assessment of student learning
 Effects of school language on students’ achievement
 Curriculum issues in mathematics education
 Primary aged children’s schemes for solving addition problems

Professor Wilmot won some prestigious awards and served on various boards and Committees. Among them are;

• Fellowship of Best International Student, College of Education, Michigan State University (2003)
• College of Education Alumni Endowed Scholarship, Michigan State University, Michigan. (2003).
• Best Dissertation Award, University of Cape Coast- 1997

 Lead Assessment and Curriculum Consultant for Nurses and Midwifery Council, (2009 to date).
 Member of Editorial Board, Nursing and Midwifery Journal -Journal for Professional Nurses and Midwives in Ghana, (2016 to date).
 Chairperson, Governing Council of the National Inspectorate Board, Ministry of Education, Ghana (2017-2020). He also served on the Advisory Board of Ghana’s, Minister for Education from 2017 to 2020.

Professor Wilmot is married to Mrs. Vida Vera Wilmot, a lecturer at the Takoradi Technical University, with whom he has three children.
