In the spirit of celebration, the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) commemorated the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) in a blissful event on the 14th of March, 2024. The program was held at the CKT-UTAS Auditorium and was on the theme “Playing with Maths”.
The event was graced by dignitaries including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samson Abagale, the Acting Registrar, Mr. Gilbert Ansoglenang and the Deputy Director of Finance, Mr. Michael Yipake Banseh. Also, in attendance were students from St. John Bosco’s College of Education, Bolgatanga Girls Senior High, Our Lady of Lords Senior High, Notre Dame Minor/Senior High, St. Benedict Technical Institute, Bolgatanga Senior High, Navrongo Senior High, Paga Senior High, St. John Integrated Senior High and Awe Senior High.
In his opening remarks, Prof Kwara Nantomah, Dean of the School, welcomed the participants and stated that the focus of the event was more on the fun aspect of mathematics.
His presentation centered around engaging mathematical games which was insightful and intriguing.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abagale, congratulated the School on its 2nd Pie Day celebration and applauded their efforts in organising a delightful and educative event.
He touched on the importance of mathematics in improving the quality of life and the vital role it also plays in the breakthroughs in Science and Technology.
He advised students to embrace mathematics and erase the idea of it being difficult. He also took the opportunity to encourage women and girls to venture into mathematics, because, they have so much to offer in a field traditionally dominated by men.
Activities held during the event included poetry recital, mathematical games, and presentations from various schools and departments. Speakers included, Prof. Baba Seidu (Vice Dean, SMS), Prof. Nasiru Suleman (HoD, Statistics and Actuarial Science), Mr. Isaac Aboyom Anontise (Head, University Relations), Prof. James Abugri (Dean, SCBS), Mr. Francis Xavier (Rep, SoSMTE), Prof. Douglas Boah (Director, Academic Planning and Quality Assurance), Dr. Peter Agbedemnab (Rep, SCIS) and a Representative from the Students’ Association of SMS.
